Echium pininana, commonly known as the Tower of Jewels, is a remarkable biennial plant that adds a touch of drama to Irish gardens. Its impressive height and stunning flower spikes make it a sought-after choice in the Irish climate.

Height/Spread: Echium pininana can reach towering heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters) or more, with a spread of approximately 2-3 feet (60-90 centimeters). Its vertical growth habit and striking presence make it a standout feature in the garden.

Position: This plant thrives in a sunny and sheltered position in Irish gardens. It prefers a spot that receives full sun exposure for most of the day, as it requires ample light to grow and develop properly. It is important to protect it from strong winds, as the tall flower spikes can be vulnerable to damage.

Soil: Echium pininana prefers well-drained soil that is moderately fertile. It can adapt to a range of soil types, but it thrives in sandy or loamy soil with good drainage. Adding organic matter to the soil before planting helps improve its overall fertility and moisture-retention capabilities.

Flowering Season: The Tower of Jewels is known for its magnificent flowering season, typically occurring from late spring to early summer in the Irish climate. During this time, it produces tall, cone-shaped flower spikes adorned with numerous small, bell-shaped flowers that range in color from blue and purple to pink. These flowers provide a vibrant display and attract pollinators to the garden.

Uses: Echium pininana is highly valued for its ornamental appeal and serves as a focal point in Irish gardens. Its impressive height and beautiful flowers make it a striking addition to flower borders or as a standalone specimen plant. It also works well in coastal gardens, adding an exotic touch. Additionally, the Tower of Jewels can be used as a temporary screening plant or as part of a wildlife garden to attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
