A medium-sized, bushy, deciduous shrub or small tree with twisted branches. It has red-burgundy foliage in spring that turns green in summer and then bronze-green in autumn. There are purple-red catkins on bare stems in winter and these are followed by red nuts. The twisted branches, leaf colours, catkins and nuts provide interest all year.
