Acer palmatum 'Red Pygmy' is a refined, slow-growing Japanese maple from the linearilobum group, noted for its elegant, very narrow strap-like leaves. Spring foliage emerges rich red, often bronzing, softening in summer, and finishing with vivid red to orange autumn colour. Forming a compact, small tree with a graceful, upright habit, it’s ideal for sheltered courtyards, smaller gardens and large containers, and fits beautifully into Japanese-inspired or architectural plantings. Grow in a moist but well‑drained, humus‑rich soil that is preferably acidic to neutral, in partial shade, with protection from cold or drying winds to prevent leaf scorch. Ultimately a small tree within 2–5m, depending on site and pruning.
