Hydrangea macr. Pink P23, 7+ flower
Hydrangea macrophylla with pink blooms is a classic, summer-flowering shrub for Irish gardens, valued for its showy flower heads from mid to late season and handsome green, deciduous foliage. Best in light shade (morning or evening sun) and a sheltered spot, it thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil; mulch annually to conserve moisture and avoid drought or waterlogging. Flower colour in H. macrophylla varies with soil pH: pink tones are strongest on neutral to alkaline soils, while acid soils can turn flowers blue to purple. Fully hardy in Ireland, it grows at a moderate rate, typically reaching around 1–2m over time, and is ideal for mixed borders or large containers where consistent moisture can be maintained.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
