Skimmia jap. Rubella
Skimmia jap. Rubella is a compact, slow-growing evergreen valued for long winter bud colour and spring fragrance. Glossy dark green leaves form a neat mound, while tight panicles of deep red buds are held through autumn and winter, opening to clusters of small, fragrant white flowers in spring. A male selection, it does not produce berries. Grow in partial to full shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acid to neutral (ericaceous) soil; avoid alkaline/chalky soils and hot afternoon sun. Excellent for containers, shaded borders and winter interest, eventually reaching about 1–1.5 m in height and spread.
