Pinus schwerinii 'Wiethorst' is a distinctive and attractive evergreen conifer with a unique growth habit. This cultivar is a variant of the Japanese white pine species, Pinus parviflora, and is known for its dense, compact form and striking blue-green needles.

Height/Spread: 'Wiethorst' typically grows to a height of about 3-4 meters (10-13 feet) with a spread of 1.5-2 meters (5-6.5 feet). Its compact size makes it suitable for smaller gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes.

Position: In the Irish climate, 'Wiethorst' thrives in a position that receives full sun to light shade. It prefers a sheltered location, especially in regions with strong winds, as the delicate needles can be susceptible to damage.

Soil: This cultivar prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soils. It can tolerate various soil types, including sandy or loamy soils, as long as they are not waterlogged. Adding organic matter to the soil can improve its moisture retention and overall health.

Flowering Season: As a pine tree, 'Wiethorst' produces inconspicuous flowers called cones rather than showy flowers. The cones are small and hidden within the foliage. They mature and release seeds in the late summer to early autumn.

Uses: 'Wiethorst' is an excellent choice for ornamental planting in Irish gardens. Its compact size and dense, blue-green needles add visual interest throughout the year. Due to its unique appearance, it can be used as a specimen tree, focal point, or as part of mixed conifer plantings. It also works well in rock gardens, where its compact form creates an appealing contrast with other plants.

Specify in the Irish climate: Pinus schwerinii 'Wiethorst' is well-suited for the Irish climate, as long as it is planted in a suitable location with good drainage and protection from strong winds. With its compact size and low maintenance requirements, this cultivar can be a valuable addition to gardens in Ireland, providing year-round beauty and structure to the landscape.
