MALUS JOHN DOWNIE
Malus 'John Downie' is a medium-sized deciduous crab apple with bright green leaves and pink-budded white blossom in spring, followed by masses of scarlet-orange fruits in autumn. Best grown in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil, it is fully hardy and typically reaches about 8m tall and wide in 20–50 years. The spring flowers are valuable for pollinators, and the autumn fruits provide seasonal interest and are appreciated by birds.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
