Magnolia in cultivars

Magnolia cultivars are prized specimen trees grown for their striking, tulip- or star-shaped blooms and elegant branching, thriving in Ireland where they are best placed in sun or light shade with shelter from cold winds. They prefer a moisture-retentive but well-drained, humus-rich soil that is neutral to acidic; avoid very chalky conditions. Plant young to minimise root disturbance, keep well watered through the first seasons, and mulch annually with leafmould or composted bark to conserve moisture. Magnolias generally need little pruning; avoid hard cuts and instead remove only damaged or crossing growth after flowering. Ideal as structural, focal trees for lawns and borders, providing long-term architectural presence with minimal routine care.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
