Acer palm. Shaina
Acer palmatum 'Shaina' is a compact, slow-growing, deciduous Japanese maple forming a dense, rounded small tree. New foliage emerges bright red in spring, deepens to rich red tones through summer and finishes with striking crimson-red autumn colour. Suited to small gardens, courtyards and containers, it does best in a sheltered position with sun or light shade, in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil that is acid to neutral. Ultimate size around 2–2.5m in height and spread over time.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
