Fatsia japonica

Fatsia japonica is a bold, architectural evergreen shrub valued for its large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves that bring instant structure to shaded Irish gardens. Best grown in partial to full shade in a sheltered position, it prefers moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil. In autumn it carries rounded clusters of small white flowers, often followed by black berries for added seasonal interest. Given time it forms a substantial, bushy specimen to around 4m in height and spread in favourable conditions, making an excellent backdrop or focal point for courtyard and woodland-style plantings. Shelter from cold, drying winds; mulch to retain soil moisture. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
