Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple,' commonly known as Smokebush, is a captivating deciduous shrub cherished for its stunning deep purple foliage and unique, smoky inflorescences. In the Irish climate, this striking shrub can add a touch of drama and color to gardens, making it a favored choice for landscape enthusiasts.

Height/Spread: 'Royal Purple' can reach a height of about 3-5 meters (10-16 feet) with a spread of 2.5-4 meters (8-13 feet). Its upright, bushy form creates an eye-catching presence in the landscape.

Position: This Cotinus variety thrives in a position with full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate different light levels, it develops the most intense purple foliage coloration when exposed to ample sunlight. In the Irish climate, planting it in a spot with good sun exposure can help enhance its visual appeal.

Soil: 'Royal Purple' is adaptable to various soil types, but it prefers well-draining soils that are moderately fertile. It can tolerate some dryness once established but benefits from regular watering, especially during periods of prolonged drought.

Flowering Season: The unique feature of Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' is its "smoke-like" inflorescences, which appear in early to mid-summer. These airy, purplish-pink plumes give the shrub its common name, Smokebush. The fluffy appearance of the flowers adds an ethereal quality to the landscape.

Uses: 'Royal Purple' is a versatile shrub that offers multiple uses in the garden. Its striking foliage and flowering display make it an excellent choice as a focal point in borders or mixed shrubbery. Additionally, it can be employed as a hedge or screen due to its bushy growth habit and rich color. The vibrant foliage also works well in contrast with other plants, creating dynamic visual combinations.

In the Irish climate, Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' performs admirably, especially in locations that receive adequate sunlight. With its resilience to varying soil conditions and moderate watering requirements, it can thrive in many Irish gardens. Its captivating purple foliage and unique flowers contribute to a stunning landscape throughout the growing season, making it a valuable addition to any garden design.
