Physalis alk. var. franchetii
Chinese lanterns famed for their vivid orange-red, papery lanterns in late summer and autumn, Physalis alk. var. franchetii is a vigorous, rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with green foliage and small white summer flowers that give way to the colourful inflated calyces. Grow in sun or light shade in moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil; fully hardy and easy, but best contained if spreading is unwanted. Excellent for borders and for cutting and drying, with an eventual height and spread around 60–90cm.
