Crinodendron Hookeranum
Crinodendron hookerianum (Chilean lantern tree) is an evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its glossy dark green foliage and striking, pendant, lantern-like red flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. Best grown in Ireland in a sheltered position with partial shade and protection from cold, drying winds, it thrives in moist but well‑drained, humus‑rich, acid (ericaceous) soil. Ideal as a specimen for woodland-style or sheltered gardens, it can become a substantial feature over time (often 5m+ in favourable conditions). Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove wayward growth.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
