Best in Ireland in light, dappled shade with shelter from cold, drying winds, they thrive in humus-rich, moist but well‑drained, lime‑free (ericaceous) soil. Plant shallowly into ericaceous compost, keep the root zone evenly moist, and mulch annually with leaf-mould or pine needles to conserve moisture and maintain acidity. Avoid chalk or compacted clay, and protect opening buds from late frosts.
