Spring foliage opens yellow flushed with pink, deepening to fresh green in summer, then turning clear yellow in autumn before leaf-fall, while the young stems glow coral-red for striking winter colour. Grow in a sheltered position out of cold, drying winds, in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil that is preferably acid to neutral; avoid shallow chalk. Suits sun or light shade, where steady moisture helps prevent leaf scorch.
