The leaves emerge deep red to purple-red, holding rich colour through the growing season before turning vivid crimson in autumn. Best in a sheltered spot out of drying winds, it thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile soil that is neutral to acid and is ideal as an architectural specimen for small gardens, patios and Japanese-inspired planting.
